So What is the title of a Miles Davis tune. It’s also a question that may be shortened to So? What would happen if you asked yourself that question with the intention of answering it and acting on it? So what are you going to do? Acting is less stressful than obsessing, and it’s better for your health.
Substituting action for thought can get you unstuck quickly. Instead of repeating, I can’t believe I got myself into this mess, try taking the first step to get out of it. It’s like washing one dish instead of thinking how awful the task is, or how long it will take to wash all of them. One action eliminates the aversion.
Pointless mental activity is a distraction you don’t need. If ADHD is a problem of managing cognitive complexity, simplifying is an antidote. Activating is simpler than generating thoughts. As a wise teacher once said, if you want to get out of it, get into it.
As always, I welcome your comments.
